We can certainly blame our society, the digital space, social media, and Amazon…for creating a constant demand for more. But beyond the cultural shift, there is this drive within us to receive what we desire and to keep going right past it.
It’s not just about raising the ceiling to new, higher goals, but it’s this addictive behavior that says “I want more of that”.
It is very similar to the dopamine hit on social media and why it is so hard to get off.
So when you have a killer month financially or you finally land the dream client, what do you do? Keep going. Even when you are tired or burnt out. You keep going.
Why wouldn’t you when it feels like you finally made it? You have to capitalize on your momentum, keep up the engagement, bring in the steady income.
You try to repeat exactly what you just did, so that you can once again receive what you desire. Makes sense if it worked the last time.
The problem is—you are not ready to receive more.
In fact, if it feels forced, rushed, and down right frustrating, it is going to back fire on you and your business.
This has happened to me more times than I can count. Until I learned the about ascension.
I was introduced to the concept of Be > Do > Receive by a mentor
that described how you need to step into being the person who receives what you desire before taking action. (This is a wonderful practice in marketing to evaluate how you are showing up as a business owner). To take this one step further, Penney Peirce, author of The Intuitive Way, suggests that after you receive you must ascend to the new person you have become before taking action again.
Seems counterintuitive in business. Why wouldn’t you keep going when you are riding the wave of success?
But if you continue to operate in the same manner you will get caught in this cycle of doing to receive and not actually making it to your next goal. You become uninterested, burnt out, and possibly bitter or angry.
Now that I am familiar with my own signs that it is time to hit pause and allow myself to ascend business has gotten easier. It takes the pressure off and gives you the space to learn instead of push right past your next milestone.
Just last week I felt this strong pull to slowdown and get off my phone.
No content creation.
No brainstorming new offers.
No emails about how to work with me.
Just being. Even if it meant boredom.
This is coming off the launch of my group mentorship program, signing a new private client, working on my own rebrand, and gaining several new leads in my local market.
It feels like I should keep going. But I can’t.
In fact, sharing this experience is about the only thing that feels natural right now.
The next time you feel the itch to keep going, paired with signs of misalignment, use this post as your permission slip to pause.
Your greatest idea might just be hiding around the corner and you’ll miss it if you go flying by.
